Carmine Malfitano is a registered social worker and psychotherapist with over 10 years of experience in clinical practice and education, and 15 years of experience in research. He currently serves as Director of Research and Education at the Centre for Psychology and Emotional Health, where he leads innovative educational and research programs. Additionally, he holds the position of Clinical Social Work Specialist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and is a trainer in community counseling at the HIV Prevention Lab, Toronto Metropolitan University. He earned his Master’s degree in Social Work from the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and completed his doctoral studies focused on traumatic stress in primary caregivers of individuals facing a diagnosis of advanced cancer.
Carmine works with his clients with thoughtfulness and respect to co-create a safe, non-judgmental space where they can explore important issues, identify strengths, and foster meaningful changes. His integrative person-centred approach combines Emotion Focused Therapy with principles and interventions from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness. He supports individuals struggling with: relationship issues, depression, low-self-esteem, self-criticism, unfinished business, and various types of anxiety. He also helps couples navigate relational difficulties, working from an Emotion Focused Therapy approach to improve communication, deepen emotional connections, and resolve conflicts.
At the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, he has contributed to numerous grants and research projects and has provided therapy to individuals and families facing advanced cancer and the end of life. As an educator, Carmine has extensive experience in training and mentoring students, trainees, and mental health professionals across various training backgrounds. He has also extensive experience as an activist, advocate, outreach worker, and counsellor in the LGBTQ community. He has experience working with individuals struggling with issues related to the coming out journey, body image and disordered eating, gender identity or sexual orientation, or a new diagnosis of HIV. He has also worked with couples navigating the complexity of same sex relationships.
